Recommended Female and Male Gynecologists in Kuala Lumpur (KL), Malaysia 2022
How many times have you tried Googling and asking your friends for recommended Gynaecologists, but found yourself confused and overwhelmed?
We have received this question recently, "I am pregnant. Is it better to see an obstetrician or a gynaecologist?". Hmm, looks like we have not done a good job in explaining to our readers.
O&G stands for Obstetrics and Gynaecology. What's the difference between obstetricians and gynaecologists? Most gynaes are qualified with a post-graduate qualification in O&G i.e. MRCOG or Master of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Therefore, they are trained both in obstetrics as well as gynaecology. An obstetrician specialises in pregnancy related aspects of women's health whereas a gynae specialised in the 'non-pregnancy' related aspects.
Next, you may also need to understand that there are 4 primary subspecialties in ob/gyn:
1) maternal fetal medicine (obstetrics)
2) reproductive endocrinology and infertility (IVF etc.)
3) female pelvic and reconstructive surgery (uro-gynae)
4) gynaecologic oncology (gynae-oncologist)
So if you are pregnant, you should see an obstetrician, a gynae who specialises in maternal fetal medicine. An analogy would be, should you buy a Toyota or a car? We all know that Toyota is a brand of a car but a car can come in the form of many brands. In summary, most gynaes are trained in obstetrics but not all of them sub-specialise in obstetrics. Similarly, all gynae are medical doctors. You need to have a medical degree before you can go into specialty training like O&G. Again, all gynaes need to be qualified from their post-graduate training (MRCOG or Master of Obstetrics and Gynaecology) before they can go into gynae sub-specialties.

List of Gynecologists in KL (Kuala Lumpur), Malaysia
To select a doctor, many of us rely on a single recommendation, or even a random search through the search engines. Your gynecologist or women’s health specialist assists you with your pregnancy, screens you for diseases, helps you plan a family and more. And when you are pregnant, this person is the one to ensure two people (you and your baby) are at the best possible health. However, choosing the right obstetrician and gynecologist (O&G) for your pregnancy and also the right place to deliver your baby may not be as simple as one might think.
If you have no idea how to start, check out our practical guide on how to choose a gynae in Malaysia first.
An important point to note is that you need to know specifically who you would like to consult, especially in big hospitals where there are many obstetricians and gynecologists. If you are not sure, you will be randomly matched with whoever that is available.
If you are at the private hospitals and you expect the front office to recommend a particular specialist, you will likely get an answer that all their specialists are equally good. Not that useful I know. But that's the policy in private hospitals in order to avoid conflict between their medical specialists.
However, if you have done your research and would like to see a particular specialist; that's ok. Or, you would prefer a lady gynae, that's ok. The front office or the customer service department will offer you a list of options and you will need to choose one. If you were to ask who is the best? The most likely answer is 'they are equally good'. Unless, you are choosing a particular sub-specialty and there is only one specialist specialising in that field, then of course you will be recommended with the right one.

All of our 6 babies were born in UM with 5 in UMSC (Specialist wing) and the last one in PPUM. In my case, we followed the gynae and yupe, cost also plays an important part in deciding where to deliver your miracle hehe. PPUM is actually on the same floor as UMSC and other than you can't choose the attending doc who will receive your baby plus the difference in costs, there is not so much difference between UMSC and PPUM. On the cost though, there has been a steady increase for UMSC since 2008 till now. My first daughter was born in 2008 with a total cost of RM2200 for a 3 days 2 night stay versus my 5th boy who was born in 2016 with a total cost of RM5500 for a 1 day no night stay hahah. My last daughter born last year in 2018 at PPUM costs only RM450++.https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/4720656/all

5 Steps on picking the right Gynecologist in KL (Kuala Lumpur)
We know that the list above is long and you need to only choose one. Here is the guide to help you to choose the right gynecologist in KL.
1. Plan ahead
If you want to get pregnant soon, I suggest looking for an obstetrician before you get pregnant. You could make an appointment for a ‘pre-natal’ visit.
Ask a few questions to make sure he or she is the best for the job. Find out how many deliveries he or she performs in a month and how many of them are normal deliveries and how many of them are by Caeserean sections (C-sections).
I have heard of mothers considering having their deliveries at home. A definite no-no! Deliveries should be done at a well-equipped hospital and I do not recommend going for those one man operator 'maternity centres'.
If budget is a concern, you may wish to consider making an appointment at a public hospital in KL.

2. Word of Mouth
Once you've decided on who and where to see, start digging. Good old-fashioned word of mouth, through girlfriends and family members, can be helpful when searching for your match.
3. Online research
You could also do your online research with Google. However, this is the search results when you enter "How to find the best Gynecologist in Kuala Lumpur" …
Hmmm, not sure how helpful this is. You may need to dig deeper with your keywords or key phrases.
4. Your appointment
At your appointment, make sure you and your doctor share the same values. If you're going to the gynecologist seeking normal delivery and, upon discussing it at the appointment, discover that your doctor does not believe in normal delivery – head back to step 2.
5. Patient – Doctor relationship.
A good doctor will engage in a dialogue and listen instead of talking continuously without any eye-contact or just staring at his or her desktop or mobile phone . Expect your doctor to listen well, take your questions and concerns seriously and explain his or her advice and actions. If you are not comfortable with your doctor for whatever the reason, then he or she
may not be the right doctor for you.
6. Location.
Ideally, you need to find one who has a clinic in a hospital that is nearest to your home.
